Sara Hirsh Bordo- Filmmaker, Writer & Director and Founder/CEO of Women Rising; Author of Autoimmunity & The Good Girls
Autoimmune disease affects millions of women, yet many still struggle to understand why it develops and why women are diagnosed far more often than men. In this episode of r(E)volutionary Woman, filmmaker, author, and Women Rising founder Sara Hirsh Bordo shares her personal journey with autoimmune disease and the research that inspired her book Autoimmunity and the Good Girls.
Together, we explore how trauma, people-pleasing, and the pressure to always be “good” can shape the way women relate to themselves. Sara explains why so many women learn to prioritize acceptance over authenticity and how reclaiming their voice became a turning point in her own healing journey.
Whether you’re living with autoimmune disease, supporting someone who is, or simply questioning the expectations you’ve carried for years, this conversation offers thoughtful insights into identity, self-worth, and choosing yourself without guilt.
Content note: This episode discusses childhood sexual abuse, trauma, and autoimmune illness.
